East Africa Itinerary for First-Time Travelers: Plan a smooth 10-day journey through Uganda, Rwanda & Burundi, with gorilla trekking, wildlife, culture, scenic routes and expert local guidance.

Planning your first trip to East Africa is exciting—but it can also be confusing.

Should you visit Uganda or Rwanda for gorilla trekking? Can you combine Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi in one trip? How much can you realistically experience in 10 days? And how do you avoid spending your entire vacation sitting in a vehicle?

At Augustine Tours, these are questions we hear regularly from travelers planning their first journey to East Africa.

The good news is that 10 days can be enough to create an extraordinary East African adventure if the itinerary is designed around your priorities.

We work with travelers who want more than a checklist of tourist attractions. Our small-group and tailor-made tours combine wildlife, culture, nature and meaningful encounters with local communities.

In this guide, we’ll share one way we would structure a 10-day Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi itinerary for a first-time traveler.

Please note: This is a sample itinerary. Driving times, border procedures, gorilla permit availability and international flight schedules can affect the final route. We customize the itinerary according to your travel dates, interests and preferred pace.

Day 10BurundiLake Tanganyika and departure

There are many ways to organize this journey. In fact, our existing Uganda-Rwanda-Burundi program demonstrates how these three countries can be combined into one overland experience, with gorilla trekking in Uganda and cultural and natural attractions in Rwanda and Burundi.

Day 1: Welcome to Kigali, Rwanda

Your East African adventure begins in Kigali.

Depending on your international flight arrival time, we’ll meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel.

If you arrive early enough, we can arrange a gentle introduction to Kigali.

We don’t recommend filling your first day with too many activities. After a long international flight, a relaxed evening gives you time to rest, meet your guide and prepare for the adventure ahead.

Kigali is also an excellent introduction to Rwanda before you travel into the country’s mountainous interior.

Day 2: Kigali to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, we’ll begin the journey north toward Volcanoes National Park.

The scenery changes dramatically as we leave Kigali. Rwanda’s famous rolling hills and agricultural landscapes make the drive part of the experience.

Volcanoes National Park is home to Rwanda’s mountain gorillas and is one of the country’s most important destinations for travelers coming to East Africa.

If gorilla trekking is one of your main reasons for visiting Rwanda, we’ll make sure you have the necessary briefing and preparations before your trek.

For travelers who want to focus specifically on Rwanda, we also offer a dedicated Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Trekking experience.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Today is one of the highlights of your journey.

After an early breakfast, we’ll head to the park headquarters for your gorilla trekking briefing before entering the forest with experienced guides and trackers.

The trek can be physically demanding. The gorillas live in a natural forest environment, and the time required to locate them varies.

But when you finally come face-to-face with a mountain gorilla family, the effort becomes part of the story.

We always encourage our guests to experience this moment respectfully. Gorilla trekking isn’t simply about taking photographs. It is an opportunity to observe these extraordinary animals in their natural habitat while supporting conservation and the communities surrounding the park.

If you are deciding between Uganda and Rwanda for gorilla trekking, we’ve also put together a detailed guide covering gorilla trekking in Rwanda versus Uganda.

Day 4: From Rwanda to Uganda

Today we cross into Uganda.

One of the things we love about traveling overland in East Africa is that the journey itself becomes part of the adventure.

Rather than simply flying between destinations, you get to see rural landscapes, villages and changing scenery as you move from one country to another.

Uganda is known as the Pearl of Africa, and the country’s forests and landscapes provide a fascinating contrast to Rwanda.

Depending on your interests, your route can be designed around Bwindi and gorilla trekking or expanded to include additional wildlife experiences.

Day 5: Discover Uganda

Uganda deserves much more than a quick stop.

For travelers interested in gorillas, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the most important destinations.

But Uganda is also home to chimpanzees, diverse wildlife, forests, lakes and spectacular landscapes.

For travelers who want to explore beyond gorillas, we offer bespoke Uganda gorilla trekking safaris that can incorporate experiences such as chimpanzee tracking and wildlife viewing.

If you only have 10 days, we will help you decide which experiences are most important rather than trying to fit everything into one itinerary.

Day 6: Uganda to Rwanda

Uganda to Rwanda Itinerary

Today we continue our journey toward Rwanda.

This is where thoughtful itinerary planning becomes especially important.

A common mistake when planning an African safari is trying to add too many attractions simply because they look close together on a map.

Road conditions, border crossings and the geography of East Africa mean that distances can take longer than travelers expect.

Our job is to build a route that gives you time to experience each destination—not simply arrive, take a photograph and leave.

We design tailor-made journeys around your interests, pace and travel style.

Day 7: Rwanda to Burundi

Today we continue south toward Burundi.

For many travelers, Burundi is the most unexpected part of the journey.

While Rwanda and Uganda are internationally known for gorilla trekking and wildlife, Burundi offers a different experience centered around culture, history, landscapes and local life.

This is exactly why we enjoy combining the three countries.

You don’t experience the same type of trip three times. Each country adds something different.

Our existing Uganda-Rwanda-Burundi itinerary includes Burundi’s Gishora Royal Drum Sanctuary, Karera Waterfalls, the Source of the Nile and Lake Tanganyika.

Day 8: Gitega and the Gishora Royal Drum Sanctuary

Gitega and the Gishora Royal Drum Sanctuary

Today we explore Burundi’s cultural heritage.

One of our favorite experiences is visiting the Gishora Royal Drum Sanctuary, where you can experience traditional Burundian drumming.

For us, this is what makes travel in East Africa so rewarding.

A safari isn’t only about animals.

It is also about meeting people, understanding traditions, tasting local food, listening to stories and seeing how communities have preserved their heritage.

We have written more about the country in our guide to the best things to do in Burundi on a tailor-made tour, including cultural attractions, landscapes and Lake Tanganyika.

Day 9: Karera Waterfalls and the Source of the Nile

Burundi’s natural beauty deserves attention too.

Today we can visit Karera Waterfalls and the Source of the Nile before continuing toward the Lake Tanganyika region.

The combination of waterfalls, hills, forests and lakes gives Burundi a very different character from the classic savannah safari destinations of Kenya and Tanzania.

If you want to spend more time in the country, we can also extend your trip with a dedicated 3-day Burundi experience.

Day 10: Lake Tanganyika and Departure

Your final day brings you to the Lake Tanganyika region.

After breakfast, depending on your international flight schedule, we’ll arrange your transfer to the airport for your onward journey.

If your flight is later in the day, we can leave some time to enjoy the lake and relax before departure.

And just like that, your 10-day journey through three East African countries comes to an end.

But hopefully, you’ve discovered something more important than simply three countries.

You’ve experienced three different cultures, landscapes and ways of life.

Is 10 Days Enough for Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi?

Yes—but we want to be realistic.

Ten days is enough for a carefully designed introduction to the three countries. It isn’t enough to see everything.

That’s why we recommend choosing your priorities before building the itinerary.

For example:

If gorillas are your priority

We can put more emphasis on Uganda and Rwanda, with gorilla trekking as the centerpiece.

If culture is your priority

We can give Burundi more time and include experiences such as Gishora, local communities and Lake Tanganyika.

If wildlife is your priority

We may recommend extending your Uganda portion or adding another East African destination.

You can explore our East African destinations to see the different countries and experiences we currently offer.

Why Combine Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi?

We believe this combination works particularly well for travelers who want an East African experience that goes beyond a traditional safari.

Uganda brings forests, gorillas, chimpanzees and wildlife.

Rwanda brings mountain landscapes, gorillas and cultural experiences.

Burundi brings traditional drumming, waterfalls, Lake Tanganyika and a different perspective on East African culture.

Together, they create a journey that is about much more than wildlife.

Should You Choose a Private or Small-Group Trip?

That depends on how you like to travel.

Our small-group tours are ideal for travelers who enjoy meeting other people while exploring East Africa with an experienced local guide.

Our tailor-made tours are different.

We build the journey around you.

That can mean changing the number of nights, adjusting accommodation, adding cultural experiences, spending longer in a national park or adapting the itinerary around your international flights.

At Augustine Tours, we specialize in both approaches.

East Africa Itinerary for First-Time Travelers: What About a Longer Trip?

If you can stay longer than 10 days, we generally recommend doing so.

Our current 13-day Uganda Gorilla Trekking, Rwanda & Burundi Tour, for example, adds substantial wildlife and cultural experiences, including Murchison Falls, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Bwindi, Kigali and Burundi.

A longer itinerary gives us more room to slow down and add experiences rather than simply increasing the number of destinations.

And if you have two weeks, our 2-week African safari itinerary provides another example of how Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi can be combined.

How We Design Your East African Journey

At Augustine Tours, we don’t believe there is one perfect African itinerary.

The right journey depends on you.

Are you traveling as a couple?

With family?

As a solo traveler?

Are you a photographer?

Is gorilla trekking your lifelong dream?

Would you rather spend more time meeting local communities?

Do you want comfortable boutique accommodation, or would you prefer to invest more of your budget in experiences?

These questions matter.

Our approach is simple: we listen first, then design the journey.

That is the philosophy behind our tailor-made African safari experiences.
