Mobility-Friendly African Safaris Accessible Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Rwanda

Last Updated on December 4, 2025 by Augustine Tours

Today, we will discuss Mobility-Friendly African Safaris: I Help Travelers With Limited Mobility Trek Gorillas — Here’s What I’ve Learned.

My name is Augustin Ndikuriyo, founder of Augustine Tours. I have spent alsmost two decades organizing safaris across East Africa, but I’ll never forget the message that landed in my inbox one quiet evening:

“I use a wheelchair, so I’ll need help seeing the gorillas. Otherwise, I’m very mobile. I’ve visited 155 countries already—and quite a few in Africa. My sister and I travel fast and want to see as many countries as possible.”

I paused, reread her message, and immediately knew two things:
She was determined, and she was worried she might be asking for too much.

But mobility-friendly African safaris are not “too much.”
They’re absolutely possible.

I replied:
“On the day of gorilla trekking in Uganda, you’ll use a seat stretcher. It will help you move around the forest comfortably. The rest of your Rwanda and Burundi itinerary is fully wheelchair accessible, including the vehicle.”

Her relief was instant. And her excitement… contagious.

Why Mobility-Friendly African Safaris Matter to Augustine Tours

Tourism—at least the way I practice it—is a human service business. There is no AI tool or automated travel engine that understands the emotion behind a message like hers. Mobility questions are not boxes to check; they are expressions of vulnerability and trust.

Some inquiries require empathy, reassurance, and experience—not algorithms.

Over the years, I’ve learned that accessible travel is not about “accommodating limitations.”
It’s about unlocking possibilities.

And Africa safari tourism offers possibilities to mobilility-challenged travelers.

Seeing Gorillas When You’re Mobility-Challenged

Many travelers assume gorilla trekking requires extreme fitness, but Uganda and Rwanda have changed the game. They’ve created real, workable systems that support travelers with limited mobility.

The first time I arranged a seat stretcher, I was nervous. Would the traveler be comfortable? Would the porters manage the terrain? Would the moment with the gorillas feel authentic?

It turned out to be one of the most emotional experiences of her life.

The porters handled everything with grace.
The traveler felt secure the entire trek.
And when she reached the gorilla family, she cried—deep, genuine, grateful tears.

Since then, I’ve organized mobility-challenged gorilla experiences for seniors, wheelchair users, and travelers recovering from surgeries or injuries. Not once has anyone said, “I shouldn’t have done this.”

Instead, they say:
“I can’t believe I almost talked myself out of this.”

Uganda and Rwanda Are Leaders in Accessibility( We Tried Them)

I’ve worked in Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, and beyond—but Uganda and Rwanda stand out for mobility-friendly planning. The porters are trained. The park staff are patient. The trekking system is organized.

I’ve taken guests to:

  • Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
  • Volcanoes National Park
  • Akagera National Park
  • Queen Elizabeth National Park

Each one offers something special, and each one understands the needs of travelers with reduced mobility.

How Does Augustine Tours Plan Mobility-Challenged Trips?

The process always begins the same way:

  1. You tell me your travel wishes
  2. I check feasibility
  3. I send your itinerary within 48 working hours
  4. You approve and book
  5. You arrive, ready for East Africa
  6. The adventure begins

There’s something beautiful about watching a traveler who once doubted their physical ability suddenly realize the entire experience is accessible.

What Travelers With Reduced Mobility Should Know

I’ve written countless emails explaining this, so here are the truths I always share:

You are not a burden as a mobility-challenged traveler

Tourism is built around helping people explore the world—every person.

Porters are highly skilled and deeply respectful.

They take enormous pride in helping you reach the gorillas.

This is your adventure too.

Mobility challenges do not diminish your right to unforgettable experiences.

If you communicate your needs honestly, we can build the perfect itinerary.

The more I know, the better I can design.

Africa will surprise you.

Most travelers expect obstacles with gorilla trekking.
Instead, they find support, compassion, and connection.

Why I Encourage Mobility-Challenged Travelers Not to Give Up

The greatest tragedy in tourism is a traveler who withdraws from their dreams because they believe they “can’t.”

Many people assume gorilla trekking is reserved for athletes or adventurers.
The truth is simple:

Gorilla trekking is for anyone with the courage to show up.

With porters, stretchers, adapted vehicles, and thoughtful planning, the forest becomes accessible. The gorillas become reachable. And the experience becomes unforgettable.

I’ve seen the transformation firsthand.
I’ve watched travelers doubt themselves…
…then sit face-to-face with a 400-pound silverback.
And in that moment, they discover they were capable all along.

If You Are Mobility-Challenged and Dream of Gorillas: Please Don’t Surrender That Dream

I wrote this second article to speak directly to you—not with keywords, but with honesty.

The African wilderness is not limited to fully mobile travelers. It is open to you too. With the right support, mobility-friendly African safaris can deliver some of the most powerful memories of your life.

If you’re ready to take the next step, I’m here to help you plan a journey shaped around your pace, your mobility level, and your dreams.

Because adventure belongs to all of us.

Neither my husband nor I are wheelchair-bound but both of us have some mobility issues. My husband has back issues from a benign mass left over from his cancer days years ago. It pulls on his spine and tends to hurt when we’ve walked for too long. I have no excuse, except that I’m not in shape. We would love to see gorillas but… I’m not sure my husband could make the trek and I am positive that he does not want to be carried. Frankly, I’m a little concerned that I wouldn’t be able to make the trek. What advice could you give me?
